Effectiveness of Smartwatches on Enhancing Health Consciousness among University Students in Hong Kong

Smartwatches enable their wearers to monitor their health indicators such as heart rate, length and quality of sleep, and fitness tracking measures like steps taken, distance travelled and calories burned.  Past studies on smartwatches and fitness trackers have focused on perception and technology acceptance of the use of those devices, and factors affecting the intention to use the devices.  Studies on whether the use of smartwatches can help improve the wearers’ health awareness are rare. This paper describes a study that investigated whether the use of smartwatches helped university students in Hong Kong develop a healthier lifestyle by exercising more, and keeping good sleep and eating habits.
