Exploring Junior Secondary Students’ ICT Usage Patterns: A Latent Profile Approach

Abstract


Drawing on a stratified sample of 1182 students from 25 Hong Kong secondary schools, this study explored students’ ICT usage patterns through latent profile analysis.  A total of 18 ICT activities covering learning and information search, social media and entertainment, surfing and shopping, and content generation were considered.  Based on fit indices and practical interpretability, four profiles of ICT patterns were identified: low engagement (27.5%), entertainment oriented (26.7%), high engagement (12.0%), and balanced learners (33.8%).  Implications of findings were discussed.
