Presence Pedagogy: creating a Community of Inquiry in a Virtual Classroom

Abstract


As the use of technology-mediated learning environments expands in higher education, it is important to examine which tools best support the construction and sustainability of a virtual classroom for distance education.  This presentation will review how the teaching / learning approach of Presence Pedagogy and the Community of Inquiry framework for online learning has been applied to teaching MSc IT in Education modules at HKU.  Three elements of transactive learning are introduced: cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence.  Several key technologies will be demonstrated to show their essential role in constructing a synchronous online environment which fosters collaboration for reflective learning.   Practical lessons learned will be shared from experience teaching online using Moodle, Adobe Connect, Second Life, and the Participation Suite of discussion tools.
