Using Mobile Instant Messenger (WhatsApp TM) to Support Students’ English Writing: Designing and Assessing Learning with Mobile Coaching

Abstract


Mobile Coaching model: Teams of 5 to 6 students are put into a WhatsApp TM chat group with two online coaches. Each week, team members post commentaries in sequence according to a topic and assigned roles. Online coaches give feedback and stimulate chatting. This model is implemented in three classes for two months. The errors in writing are categorised by error codes, the frequencies of which are the measuring instrument of learning progress. A questionnaire and group interviews are conducted to gauge participants’ perceptions towards the learning experience. This paper provides some empirical evidence to evaluate the Mobile Coaching model.
