Abstract

Under the requirement of lifelong learning and E-learning, researches on self-regulated learning (SRL) and self-directed learning (SDL) are boost. Though the two terms have many similarities, there are still some differences. However, increasing number of researches blur the boundaries between them. This study attempts to distinguish SDL from SRL by looking at important concept in both filed and empirical studies.

First, similarities between SDL and SRL are highlighted, such as learner control, the role of motivation, key phases, etc. Furthermore, time axis is used to show the development of SRL and SDL. Afterwards, differences between the two terms are showed. Literature review showed that SDL and SRL have different origins, are practiced in different environment. As time went by, the differences between them become smaller.
